5 on Friday - 43

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

A Piece of My Mind heads into its third week of our journey through nine decades of recorded popular music.

1 - I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire - 1941 - The Ink Spots

I don't want to set the world on fire
I just want to start
A flame in your heart

In my heart I have but one desire
And that one is you
No other will do

- Benjamin / Durham / Marcus / Seiler

2 - String of Pearls - 1942 - Glenn Miller

3 - After You've Gone - 1945 - Django Reinhardt

After you've gone
And left me crying
After you've gone
There's no denying

You'll feel blue
You'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal
You've ever had

There'll come a time
Now don't forget it
There'll come a time
When you'll regret it

Some day
When you'll grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine
And you'll want me only

After you've gone
After you've gone away

- Creamer / Layton

4 - Too Darn Hot - 1948 - Mel Torme

I'd like to sup
With my baby tonight
Refill the cup
With my baby tonight

But I ain't up
To my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot
Too darn hot
Too darn hot

- Cole Porter

5 - Nature Boy - 1948 - Nat King Cole

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea

A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise was he

And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me

"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in return"

- Eden Ahbez

Stopping by and finding Django Reinhardt made it worth the visit. Great selections of some classic songs.

"It's Too Darn Hot" was one of my favorites from "Kiss Me, Kate" and I can't hear "Nature Boy" without thinking of "Moulin Rouge" but I loved that movie so that's a good thing!

This time of year gets me in the mood for anything Nat King Cole!

This reminds me of visiting my grandparents when my grandpa was home. He spent a lot of time at sea as a Merchant Marine. But when he was home, he used to play this kind of music.

Thanks for the memory!
