In memory of my Uncle Frank, who passed away on Wednesday, January 21st, 2015, here's a set of traditional bluegrass and Appalachian music for a Virginia mountain man and gentle giant.

That's my mom giving her brother-in-law the classic Meuse sisters cheek squeeze in the early 80s. My grandma, originally a Meuse, and all of her sisters -- and possibly all female ancestors from this line -- were unrivaled cheek squeezers.

Usually he was too tall to have to worry about that too much. Ha ha!

1 - Wandering Boy - Adam Hurt

2 - Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver

3 - Keep on the Sunny Side - The Carter Family

4 - Tis Sweet to Be Remembered - Flatt and Scruggs

5 - In the Sweet By and By - Bluegrass Martins

As you no doubt noticed, there wasn't a 5 on Friday set last week, as Brad was in surgery last Friday, having his appendix removed.

Although for Western calendars, the new year dawned on Jan. 1st, in the Chinese year it's still the Year of the Horse. For both Brad and me it's been a year of moving on, and even in these last weeks of Horse energy, we're leaving things behind that don't work for us any longer. Like his appendix!

Brad's at home now after spending six days in the hospital. It hadn't burst, but was hanging by a thread from doing just that, so he had a lot of abdominal infection and inflammation from which to recover.

This week's set goes out to all of our friends, near and far, who wished Brad a speedy recovery.

1 - All About Us - t.A.T.u.

2 - Yellow - Coldplay

3 - Lean on Me - Bill Withers

4 - Best Friend - Harry Nilsson

5 - Stand By You - The Pretenders

January dawns and I'm launching a brand new feature this year, now that I've wrapped up 2014's The Hit Makers.

This year I'll be taking a once-a-month look at specific instruments and showcasing five songs or tunes which place that instrument front and center.

My new feature is called Spotlight On...

...and for our first instrument, I'm looking at that most primal of instruments: the hand. Here are five songs which shine a spotlight on handclapping

1 - The First Circle - Pat Metheny Group - 1984

2 - Cecilia - Simon and Garfunkel - 1970

3 - Eight Days a Week - The Beatle - 1964

4 - Stuck in the Middle With You - Stealers Wheel - 1972

5 - Car Wash - Rose Royce - 1976
