Poetry Train Monday - 125 - Something Told the Wild Geese

I'm making a slight detour from my all-found-poetry-all-the-time for today's Poetry Train.

These lyrics are in a piece my choir will be singing in concert in a few weeks. The first time we rehearsed it I was struck by the beauty of the words. Then I realized that the piece is in fact a poem set to music.

Something Told the Wild Geese

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go,
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, "snow."

Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned, "frost."

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly,
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

- Rachel Field

Here's a version I found on YouTube by a children's choir - enjoy!

Maybe it's just me, but the wild (Canada) goose always sounds the same to me, regardless of season. Along the lines of 'Feed me!'
