I grew up in Dartmouth, the city across the harbour from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Now both cities are combined, so when people ask me where I'm from, I just say Halifax. I spent so much time there it's true, anyway.
1 - Strawberry rhubarb pie
2 - The Halifax-Dartmouth ferry
It's part of the transit commute if you don't want to take the bus over the bridge.
3 - East Coast music
Whether it's a traditional kitchen party, the Atlantic Jazz Festival or blues like Charlie A'Court can play, it's a part of our soul here.
4 - It's the gathering place for Atlantic Canada. Many Newfoundlanders, Cape Bretoners and rural Nova Scotians relocate here for work and add to the cultural pulse.
5 - The fog and mist. I'm all about moody atmosphere.
6 - The Acadian accent. My family is of Acadian (French) descent, so I love listening to Acadian speakers, whether they're speaking French or English.
7 - The Scottish heritage. Everything about Nova Scotia (or New Scotland) has deep Celtic ties.
This is the Nova Scotia tartan.
8 - The old buildings.
The Town Clock
Historic Properties
Alexander Keith's Brewery
9 - The people
We're an irreverent bunch.
10 - The Atlantic Ocean
The tides course through my veins.
11 - The evergreen forests.
12 - The rocky coastline
I'd love to visit Halifax! The pie looks very yummy, strawberries... mmmmm!
ReplyDeleteMy TT is about Google & me. ;-)
I love living in Halifax. I would spend summers here visiting family, and always loved it. The fog still freaks me out some days.
ReplyDeleteI need to make pie...
Those photos are gorgeous! If I didn't already live here, I'd want to visit after seeing those pictures. Except the fog. I'm tired of fog.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I have a ton of frozen rhubarb and strawberries left over from last season. Maybe I should turn them into a pie.
My goodness, Julia! Why am I so surprised that it's so gorgeous there?
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to come visit!!!
Okay, I needed to look no further than #1. Strawberry rhubarb pie. It just doesn't get any better.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
~Toni~
My grandmother used to make the best strawberry rhubarb pie. I love these lists about cities. Makes me want to travel more. :)
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to visited out east for a long, long time. (And I will eventually.) It may sound weird but I'm a huge fan of CBC's Land and Sea precisely because it focuses on the Maritimes.
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea it was so interesting there! Lovely pics!
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful there, nothing like Halifax, Yorkshire, England!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I forget how beautiful Halifax is, thanks for reminding me.
ReplyDeleteHalifax/Nova Scotia is the BEST place in the world. Period. End of story.
ReplyDeleteHmm...wish I could finish my own stories so succinctly.
Kelly, just wait until I list 13 wonderful things about Mississauga! (Just kidding - don't throw things...)
ReplyDeleteAh, this is a nice TT. It's always great to hear people loving the place where they live. And you've got some beautiful photos here.

ReplyDeleteI'm gonna have to visit now, simply for #5 and #11.
ReplyDeleteUh oh, after reading comments, I see the fog's not real popular. Oops =)

ReplyDeleteHmm...another place to add to my list of "must visit"! The pictures were beautiful, great TT!
ReplyDeleteOoh.. loved the misty shots, particularly the one with trees.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely photos! Especially of the pie...YUM. Halifax seems idyllic. I hope to visit someday. So far I've never been past Toronto.
ReplyDeleteI love Canada!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous photos. You could put a travel brochure together with these. I hadn't realized how much some of the buildings have a strong Scottish/English look to them. I have to say I would love to spend time living there. You made it sound so incredible. Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteMmmm, strawberries. I'm not so sure about the rhubarb. The word makes me giggle, though. That and rutabaga.
ReplyDeleteHalifax always makes me think of Anne of Green Gables. So, while I've never been, I think of it with fondness. ;)
ReplyDeletei love rubarb pie! we had it growing in our back yard when I was growing up in Washington State. my mom made rubarb/applesause and canned it by the dozens of quarts. She made the pies from that and would add the strawberries only when they were in season.
ReplyDeletethanx for helping me see your home thru your eyes. lovely. the coastline shots were amazing.
The pics are amazing& yeah i want some of that delicious pie too! mmmmmmm! hey thanx for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! I love that one of the boats.
ReplyDeleteMy brother-in-law is from Nova Scotia too.
One of my best friends when I lived in Sweden was another exchange student from Canada. She was from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia which was ironic because I had been accepted into college at Bridgewater College in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteShe used to show me pics from Halifax all the time and it looked so beautiful. I still want to visit there one day!
*groans* I Luuuuuurrrrrvvvv Strawberry Rhubarb Pie!
ReplyDeleteReally great post. Makes me want to come visit. ;)
Wow, that looks like a fantastic place to live. I'll be right up -- save a piece of the rhubarb for me!
ReplyDeleteI meant to post this comment a few days ago. After you asking about my mom and her computer savvy and after me reading this T13... I got a call from my mom telling me she's taking a cruise in September... destination Halifax! So ironic!
ReplyDeleteHi - slow getting back to you here! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat great pictures and what a beautiful tribute to Nova Scotia. I'd love to go back some day when I have time to explore. :)
