Wordless Wednesday - 64

  1. These are two photos I took five years ago, after Hurricane Juan demolished Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The park is at the head of the harbour, and took the brunt of the category 2 winds. From a deeply forested beauty, Point Pleasant is now a ravaged skeleton of itself. It's actually disorienting to walk through it, because the old landmarks are gone forever. But Halifax residents still cherish our Point Pleasant, and we always will.

Join me tomorrow for a look back at the way Hurricane Juan changed my city in a matter of hours.

  2. Yeah, that devastation's on my mind, too. Or Gustav's is. I didn't know about Juan; I'm looking forward to reading more!

  7. Juan sure did make a mess. Sorry about that, Julia. Has the place recovered from it? Do the scars show?

  9. My son Juan is still very proud of having a hurricane named after him. Too bad it was the worse ever to hit Canada...

My WW post is here. Have a great day!

  10. Great shiots. It shows the awesome power of nautre. The UK very occasionally gets the tail end of a huurricane. We did in 1987 THe damage it did was horrendous, especially to trees. Happy WW

  11. We moved back here the summer after Juan and I went with a friend to Point Pleasant. By that time most of the trees and debris had been cleaned up, but it was still a terrible sight. We had gone there a lot when the kids were little and I choked up seeing it look like that. Hard to believe I was in the same place.

  12. Sandy - the scars are covered up. It's the absence of trees that is the true scar.

Annette - I spent much of my childhood at Point Pleasant Park. I still find it painful to walk around there. Although the tree loss uncovered a holy well in the center of the park that I'd never seen before, in 35 years of roaming all over it. Whenever I get close to this well, I really feel a powerful energy coming from it. It's along the hemlock walk if you want to look for it.

  13. Icky poo - I hope no one was hurt during Juan. Right now, the USA is gearing up for Hanna, Ike and Josephine - on the heels of Gustav. And some people don't believe in global warming!

  14. Hi Julia, sorry I'm so late n returning. But I got to read your Thursday post that way as well.
Hurricanes are very bad weather storms. We came home from Baton Rouge Saturday evening with all the evacuees coming to Texas.
We had to go to to Louisiana for the LSU openning football game.
