My Tins Collection

Ever since I was a little girl, I've been quite taken by tins. My mom used to keep all her loose buttons in a blue cookie tin that had a scene of a Mediterranean road on it, going past a house and cypress trees. Pretty much like this photo.

I would sit and stare at the scene on the cookie tin lid, and make up stories that I told out loud to my dolls, all lined up to hear my tales. I can't remember what the stories were about, other than they involved the main character starting down that road pictured on the tin.

My mom also had a royal blue tin with pastoral shepherds and shepherdesses on it, where she kept her rice. I loved that tin.

Once I was an adult, I found myself buying items just for the tin they came in. And sometimes I would even buy an antique tin if I was lucky enough to find one. Here are a few of my favorite tins from my collection. I've got a whole Christmas selection of tins, but I'll save those for next holiday season.

  2. Tins are great for storing stuff. I have several to hold cards and other small doodads.

  3. I have an extra tin left over from this year's Cub Scout popcorn sales... I wish I'd thought of it; I'd have stuck a certain book inside and given you a nice surprise!

  4. Susan - that could be a future thing... for a future book!

  5. I love tins too, though I haven't got a collection. The last tin you show is very different - what's the story?

  7. These tins are gorgeous, Julia. I have a ton of tins, but they're all the same blue Danish Butter Cookie tins that I use to keep my Christmas baking in. Now I'm inspired to find some beautiful ones like yours.

  9. There was one my Nanny had with a geisha. I loved that tin.

I have one that is from WWI I found in an antique store. It's pretty beat up, it held tin but I can still see Field Marshall Haig and the King and the Prince of Wales on it.

  10. Akelamalu - the last tin is like a Faberge egg, another art treasure I'm in love with. And in The National Ballet of Canada's version of 'The Nutcracker', the Sugar Plum Fairy makes her entrance from inside a golden Faberge egg. So a few Christmases ago, I found these tins filled with chocolate chip cookies that were Faberge eggs, so I bought one for myself and for my sister, who also loves ballet and knew right away that it was a Sugar Plum Fairy egg.

Dorte H - I can't wait to see them on your blog!

Leah - I know which ones you mean. I don't save every tin I buy - but I've come across some beautiful Danish butter cookie ones. I bought one for my husband one year because it had a painting of The Snow Queen on it, and that's one of his favorite stories.

Heather - my collection will never be complete!

Amy - that antique one sounds fabulous. Dents and scrapes and all.

  12. What a great collection! My mother and I both collect tins - you've given me a great idea for a post of my own.

It never ceases to amaze me how many things you and I have in common!

  13. My mother used to have a button tin too. Her's was a plain tin and she'd decorated it. We were always tipping out the tin to look at all the different buttons she's collected. Thanks for the memory.

Hubby and I have a tin collection in our kitchen. I like the Walker shortbread tins. Of course the contents are very nice, too. Shortbread is my favorite!

  14. Ann - The phone booth one shows the woman from different angles as you turn the tin around. It's very cool.

Bobbi - I know! Kindred spirits!

    Shelley ...mmm...shortbread...must resist...shortbread...

  16. LOL I buy things for the tin too! Have you been to Neuschwanstein Castle? It's one of my faves, one of the few castles in Europe that really look like castles!
