Through the Opera Glasses - 16 - Ten Films That Deliver Gorgeous Historical Costumes

These are some of my favorite films and mini series. It's not a coincidence that all of them have exquisite costume design.

- 1 A Christmas Carol (1984)

- 2 Beowulf and Grendel (2005)

- 3 Horatio Hornblower (1998-2003)

- 4 Ivanhoe (1997)

- 5 Jesus of Nazareth (1977)

- 6 Lillie Langtry (1979)

- 7 Pride and Prejudice (1995)

- 8 Rome (HBO) (2005-2007)

- 9 Sharpe (1993-2008)

- 10 The Age of Innocence (1993)

Jeeves says Just love these pictures.

Amy Ruttan says Loved Beowulf and Grendel for the costumes and Gerard, but did not like the film.

Jennifer McKenzie says Did you see "Elizabeth"? I wondered how accurate those costumes were.

You know even though it's not historic, yet, Doris Day films and Auntie Mame give us breathtaking costumes of the 50's and 60's.

  3. Jeeves - I love having the pictures all together like this.

Amy - LOL! I remember you mentioning that on your blog. Here's where we realize that twins have their own idiosyncrasies. I love Beowulf and Grendel. I saw it at the film festival, then saw it three more times at the theatre, and now I have it on DVD. I really felt for the troll and thought the actor's performance was amazing.

  4. Yes, yes, yes. I love all of these. Did you see "Elizabeth"? I wondered how accurate those costumes were. Most historians spend a lot of time on Elizabeth's clothes (since she made political statements with them) so I wondered.

  5. Jennifer - *head slap* Of course, I love both Elizabeth films. And The Golden Age won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. I really, really love the shot of Elizabeth dressed in armour on horseback when she gives her rallying speech.

  6. I haven't seen any of those. What are the odds of that?

I have seen a bit of Horatio Hornblower, but not enough to say I've seen the show.

  7. Travis - You should see the Sharpe's! Military life, the leadership, the unit that works as one, the battle strategy - it's heavenly.
