That poster has a definite WWII flavour.

Ref: previous post - I recognize the painting on that book cover! Or I should say, I recognize the original this was somewhat altered. By Carl David Whatshisnameagain, a Romantic (i.e. of the specific school of thought, not the emotion) German painter who painted some charming everyday scenes. It's more pastoral in the original, but considered groundbreaking in making the viewer look through the eyes of the subject.
Unless I've remembered totally wrong, which is entirely possible...

M - thanks for the clue about the painter. It's Caspar David Friedrich, and the painting is called Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog. I've seen his work before and loved it, but I didn't remember his name. Thanks so much!
