5 on Friday -- Set 239

Spinning Friday tunes since 2010...

For anyone who wants to join in, simply choose five pieces of music and post them for other bloggers to enjoy. Then check out the set posted by the other 5 on Friday blogger -- you can sign in over at Golch Central's Rambling Stuff.

Now that September has arrived, it's time for my monthly feature for 5 on Friday -- The Hit Makers.

Once a month I'm going to feature the songs that launched careers. I'll be looking at different musical styles and the groups or singers from those styles who I love the best.

Here are five of my favorite bossa nova artists and the songs that brought them to the masses.

1Chega de Saudade (Enough Longing) -- Joao Gilberto -- original recording 1959 (I believe this version was recorded in the 60s)

2Desafinado (Out of Tune) -- Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd -- 1962

3 - The Girl From Ipanema -- Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz, from a composition by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes -- 1962

4 - Agua de Beber (Water to Drink) -- Antonio Carlos Jobim -- 1963

5 - Mas Que Nada (But That is Nothing) -- Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 -- 1966

5 on Friday - Set 118

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

Okay...my manuscript is now delivered to the editor.

After shooting the Scorpius book covers and book trailers two Saturdays ago, and taking part in Free Comic Book Day last Saturday, I'm most definitely looking forward to a weekend where I can catch my breath and get some rest.

What better way than to look back at a time in my life when my whole future still beckoned to me? Let's go back to when I was a young girl and my parents and aunt & uncle often listened to bossa nova. In fact, my uncle is a musician and plays this fabulous samba/jazz fusion style on his guitar with a rich, buttery tone. Over the years my aunt has learned to play jazz flute alongside him.

1 - Chovendo Na Roseira - Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim

I can't describe the feeling this piece gives me. It transports me to childhood, and I'm filled with all the sensations of knowing a sophisticated adult life waited for me one day, one as dreamy and serene and hopeful as this song. Even the fact that it's in a different language always appealed to me.

2 - Aqua de Beber - Astrud Gilberto

3 - Look Around -  Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66

4 - Ela é Carioca - Joao Gilberto

5 - O Morro Nao Tem Vez - Stan Getz with Luiz Bonfá

5 on Friday - Set 55

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

Continuing with my series on popular music through the decades, let's dive into the 1960s.

1 - Crazy - Patsy Cline - 1961

Worry
Why do I let myself worry?

Wonderin'
What in the world did I do?

Crazy
For thinking that my love
Could hold you

I'm crazy for tryin'
And crazy for cryin'
And I'm crazy
For loving you

- Willie Nelson

2 - Corcovado - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto - 1962

Quiet nights of quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
Window looking so to Corcovado

Oh! How lovely

- Antonio Carlos Jobim

3 - Route 66 - The Rolling Stones - written in 1946, released by The Rolling Stones in 1964

If you ever plan
To motor west
Travel my way
Take the highway that is the best

Get your kicks
On Route 66

- Bobby Troup

4 - Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles - 1966

Lay down all thought
Surrender to the void

It is shining
It is shining

That you may see
The meaning of within

It is being
It is being

- Lennon / McCartney

5 - Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - The Doors - written in 1927, released by The Doors in 1967

Show me the way
To the next whisky bar

Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why

For if we don't find
The next whisky bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die

I tell you
I tell you
I tell you we must die

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
Must have whisky, oh, you know why

- Brecht / Weill
