5 on Friday -- Set 301

Spinning Friday tunes since 2010...

...and sending out a Big Time Birthday Hug to my musical partner in crime, Mike Golch -- the other remaining 5 on Friday blogger!

To mark the passing of David Bowie on January 10th at age 69, A Piece of My Mind salutes a musical giant with this week's set.

1 - Ziggy Stardust - 1972

I'm going to go out on a limb -- considering his extensive musical catalogue -- but the opening chords of Ziggy Stardust can be considered to be Bowie's musical signature.

2 - Moonage Daydream - 1972

Like many people, I adored the inclusion of Moonage Daydream on the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Although I loved the whole soundtrack playlist, I always found myself starting with David Bowie's track and then hitting replay over and over.

3 - Golden Years - 1975

Once again, this track was used in a film soundtrack in the anachronistic A Knight's Tale, where Heath Ledger and the rest of the medival court danced to the strains of David Bowie in their 15th century costumes. A perfect Bowie-esque touch.

4 - Blue Jean - 1984

David Bowie showcases his considerable vocal range in this track. He was easily able to scale between nearly four octaves -- one octave containing eight notes (remember The Sound of Music and Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do) -- and was in the same pop-music range as Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Muse's Matt Bellamy. Strangely enough, two more of my favorites.

5 - This is Not America - Pat Metheny featuring David Bowie - 1985

Okay, maybe he does more vocal gymnastics on this track. Considering he's performing alongside jazz fusion heavyweight Pat Metheny -- another favorite of mine! -- I'm sure he welcomed stretching his musical chops.

A to Z Blog Challenge -- U is for Songs That Start With 'Under' / 5 on Friday -- Set 269

This is my fifth year participating in the A to Z Challenge. It's the first year that I wasn't able to complete the challenge by April 30th.

However, like those marathon runners whose main goal is to finish what they started, knowing they'll cross the finish line hours behind the top three, I'm going to carry on and complete the challenge.

Because there are so many participants, many bloggers spend the next few months visiting all of the other participants now that the posting schedule has slowed down. To see how the challenge wrap-up works, click HERE.

I'm going to backdate my entries so that they make chronological sense, but I'll also include the true posting date. I'm all out of sequence and I'm just going to finish the posts as I get to them.

So what happened? I had several things going on at once, the deal-breaker being my main computer going in the shop. I had to make some pacing choices, as I have learned to do as part of my treatment for chronic pain and fatigue issues. Believe it or not, setting the A to Z Challenge aside was actually me making progress.

And now, dear readers -- on with the show.

For today's blog challenge, let me introduce you to my regular Friday feature:

5 on Friday - Set 82

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

Last New Year's Eve, Brad and I spent our final night in Toronto at my brother-in-law's karaoke show at the Konrad Lounge on the Lakeshore in Etobicoke, just down the street from Brad's mom's place.
We had an absolute blast. This is Jeff at the console, smoothly easing the audience into taking up the mic, chiming in seamlessly if they get lost (easy to do once you're the singer!)
When I think about it, our all-night singing party really set the tone for this incredible year I'm having.
Jeff runs his Songsmith Karaoke show every Thursday at 10:00pm in Etobicoke, in the west end of Toronto at the Konrad Lounge. If you're in the area and want to have a great evening, pop by and tell him Julia sent you! These are some of the songs we tried on for size, either at their sister Karen's karaoke house party that Jeff DJ'ed, or on New Year's at Konrad's.

1 - Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie - a full-on singalong by everyone at Karen's

2 - Conquistador - Procol Harum - sung by Brad at Karen's

3 - Where Do the Children Play? - Cat Stevens - sung variously by Jeff and Brad

4 - Mary Mac - Great Big Sea - I was challenged to sing this by Jeff. Of course, I took it up. I did reasonably well, but the speedy ending did me in.

5 - The Galaxy Song - Eric Idle - This has become my signature karaoke song. I never end a karaoke evening without singing this one.

Next up in my series of popular music through the decades - the 1970s!

1 - Maggie May - Rod Stewart - 1971

Mother, what a lover
You wore me out

All you did was wreck my bed
And in the morning kick me in the head
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore

You lured me away from home
Cause you didn't want to be alone
You stole my heart
I couldn't leave you if I tried

- Quittenton / Stewart

2 - The Jean Genie - David Bowie - 1972

New York's a go-go
And everything tastes nice
Poor little greenie
Get back home

The jean genie
Lives on his back
The jean genie
Loves chimney stacks

He's outrageous
He screams and he bawls
Jean genie
Let yourself go!

- David Bowie

3 - Whatever Gets You Through the Night - John Lennon - 1974

CLICK HERE to listen to the song

Whatever gets you through the night
It's alright
It's alright

It's your money or your life
It's alright
It's alright

Don't need a sword to cut through flowers
Oh no
Oh no

- John Lennon

4 - You're My Best Friend - Queen - 1976

Ooo, you make me live
Whenever this world is cruel to me
I've got you
To help me forgive

Ooo, you make me live now, honey
Ooo, you make me live

- John Deacon

5 - Atomic - Blondie - 1979

Make me tonight
Tonight, make it right

Make me tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Make it magnificent
Tonight
Right

Your hair is beautiful
Oh, tonight

Atomic

- Destri / Harry
