A to Z Blog Challenge -- 5 on Friday -- Set 217 -- D is for Dance Club / House Music

Welcome to Day 4 of this year's A to Z Blog Challenge.

D is for Dance Club or House Music

It's April, and time for my monthly 5 on Friday feature -- The Hit Makers.

Once a month I'm going to feature the songs that launched careers. I'll be looking at different musical styles and the groups or singers from those styles who I love the best.

If you caught my Day 1 post, you'll know that I'm a passionate ballet fan. But I also love all forms of dance, including the everyman variety known as social dance. These days, the music for that is known as Dance Club or House Music. Why 'house' music?

It could refer to a specific Chicago club called The Warehouse where the early forms of house music were created by innovative DJs. It could refer to the term 'house' as the performance venue, which is what all theatres are called. It also could refer to urban slang for 'party'.

Here are five tunes that brought these artists to the forefront of public attention. Some of the artists were actually well-known in their underground niche for years before breaking through to wider public discovery. Some of them were already established in pop dance, and were pushing the boundaries by bringing house music to a wider audience.

1 - Vogue -- Madonna -- 1990

2 - Poker Face -- Lady Gaga -- 2008

3 - In Your Eyes -- Kylie Minogue -- 2002

4 - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) -- Spiller -- 2000

5 - Save the World -- Swedish House Mafia -- 2011

A to Z Blog Challenge - W - 5 on Friday Set 168

On this final Friday of the A to Z Blog Challenge we return again to the musical feature, 5 on Friday.

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

On Day 23 of the A to Z Blog Challenge

W

is for

Xena, Warrior Princess

This warrior has a special spot on my list of all-time favorite characters. Battle on, Xena.

1 - Main Title Theme  - composed by Joseph LoDuca

2 - Melt Into Me - performed by the late Kevin Smith as Ares

This song is from a musical episode called The Bitter Suite. Kevin Smith's Ares is a particular favorite of mine, and when he began dancing in this segment, I nearly lost my mind (in a good way!)

3 - Joxer the Mighty - performed by Ted Raimi, who played Joxer the comic relief / loyal friend / unrequited love interest of Xena's best friend Gabrielle

This theme appears from time to time throughout the series. In this version, it's used as part of the narrative in The Bitter Suite.

4 -California Sun - The Rivieras

This is a fan vid featuring Aphrodite, the goddess of love played by Alexandra Tydings. Aphrodite was about as far away from the warrior princess as you could get, yet somehow I fell for her charms like any other mere mortal.

5 - Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

Xena's complicated relationship with Ares was my favorite part of this series. If I create a fictional relationship with this much heat / longing / fear / rage / control / surrender, I'll be a very happy woman.

5 on Friday - Set 59

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

This wraps up my journey through the decades of recorded popular music, beginning with the 1920s.

And now I shall state for the record that I'm a dance music fan.

I love a lot of musical styles, as you've no doubt discovered through the past year of Travis' captivating musical meme. But the music genre I've always loved and will always love is Dick Clark's favorite:

"It's got a good beat and you can dance to it."

Here are only a handful of my favorite club tunes from the first decade of the new millennium.

1 - Can't Get you Out of My Head - Kylie Minogue - 2001

There's a dark secret in me
Don't leave me locked in your heart
Set me free

Feel the need
In me
Set me free

Stay
Forever
And ever
And ever

- Davis / Dennis

2 - Hung Up - Madonna - 2005

Time goes by
So slowly
Time goes by
So slowly

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run
Seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you

- Andersson / Madonna / Price / Ulvaeus

3 - SexyBack - Justin Timberlake - 2006

I'm bringing sexy back
Them other boys don't know how to act
I think it's special, what's behind your back
So turn around and I'll pick up the slack

(Take it to the bridge!)

Dirty, babe
You see these shackles, baby
I'm your slave
I'll let you whip me if I misbehave
It's just that no one makes me feel this way

(Take it to the chorus!)

- Hills / Timbaland / Timberlake

4 - Don't Get It Twisted - Gwen Stefani - 2006

Don't get it twisted
Don't get clever
This is the most craziest shit ever

Tick tock I guess I'm late again
What are you suggesting there now, Gwen?
Don't you know better?
What are you talking about?
You know it's going to come at any point

Night time
Flip flop
This time push my luck

He was really looking hot
Anticipation building up

Space invaders
Turn up all the faders
Need a translater

- Kanal / Stefani

5 - Bad Romance - Lady Gaga - 2009

Rah, rah
Ah, ah, ah
Roma
Rome mama
Gaga
Oh, la la!
Want your bad romance

I want your ugly
I want your disease
I want your everything
As long as it's free

I want your love
Love, love, love
I want your love

- Lady Gaga / Khayat

Thursday Thirteen - 140 - 13 Songs to Get Your Blood Pumping For All of Those Get-Fit Resolutions

All of these are guaranteed to make me groove. Enjoy!

1 - J.U.F. - Super Rifle (Balkan Express Train Robbery)

2 - Gwen Stefani - Don't Get it Twisted

3 - Beck - Timebomb

4 - Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

5 - Jimi Hendrix - Dolly Dagger

6 - Lady Gaga - Love Game

I just couldn't use the official Lady Gaga video for this. The True Blood version is the one that's on my playlist. I need Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) to play the love game. Unfortunately, looking at Lady Gaga takes away from my ability to enjoy her music.

7 - Sean Paul - Get Busy

8 - Blackstrobe - I'm a Man

9 - Gogol Bordello - Not a Crime

10 - OutKast - Hey Ya!

11 - Kylie Minogue and Akshay Kumar - Chiggy Wiggy

12 - Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca

13 - Tito Puente - Tito Timbalero

Americanising Desi says You have my blood pumpin :D

Hazel says Oh my Livin La Vida Loca! :-)

Hootin' Anni says Jimi Hendrix!!! ♥
