5 on Friday -- Set 294

Spinning Friday tunes since 2010...

For anyone who wants to join in, simply choose five pieces of music and post them for other bloggers to enjoy. Then check out the set posted by the other 5 on Friday blogger -- you can sign in over at Golch Central's Rambling Stuff.

As we head for my 300th set, coming up in six weeks, let's look back on some of the sets that have led to this milestone.

This is a typical set from 5 on Friday's heyday, with six active participants all posting their own sets, and lots of discussion about music in the comments section.

My sets over the years have had a vast array of inspiration. Sometimes they were part of a larger project (like this year's Spotlight On individual instruments,) sometimes they were part of my creative process while working on writing projects, and sometimes they reflected on the time of year or what was going on for me personally.

This set is a mix of late 70s/80s/early 90s tunes, a look at my typical tastes during that period.

For my look back as we approach the next milestone set, here is:

Summer Stock Sunday - 41

Robin's Summer Stock Sunday meme invites all to post summery photos, and to visit other bloggers who share their feelings and memories about this magical season.

This is one of the most iconic photos from my childhood.

My sister and I grew up alongside my two cousins as a group of four, with our two families spending both quantity and quality time together.

Because our two dads were scuba divers, we spent many magical days at Polly Cove, near Peggy's Cove. The men dived, the women set up the day's base camp and enjoyed one another's company - while we kids ran over the rocks, climbed, ran, explored, watched the waves, made return visits to the moms for snacks and juice, and generally made the kinds of memories that loom the largest when I think of the happiest times of my life.

Clockwise from left, back row: my sister Michelle, my cousin Charlie, me, and my cousin Julianne

This is my dad with Polly Cove in the background.

This photo was taken by my uncle, Charles E. Doucet - it's one of my favorites of his art photography pieces.

Taken out where we had so many great times together.

Summer Stock Sunday - 39

Robin's Summer Stock Sunday meme invites all to post summery photos, and to visit other bloggers who share their feelings and memories about this magical season.

Heading into our Way Back Machine, these shots were taken in the 1970s during an epic road trip out west.

My husband Brad and his family were born and bred in Toronto, except for his dad who hailed from Manitoba, one province west of Ontario.

One summer his Aunt Pat - the Aunt Pat who is always listed as the photographer whenever I post Brad kid pix - took my husband and his brother for a memorable vacation, about which he often reminisces.

Aunt Pat took the two youngest, Jeff and Brad, and showed them the Rockies, Lake Louise, the Columbia Icefields, as well as touching base with family in Winnipeg.

Summer - a perfect time to dust off the suitcases and see the sights that stay with you for a lifetime.

Summer Stock Sunday - 37

Robin's Summer Stock Sunday meme invites all to post summery photos and visit other bloggers who share their feelings and memories about this magical season.

This shot was taken by my husband's Aunt Pat in the 1970s at the family cottage. They spent their summers in the Ottawa Valley in Ontario, the cottage nestled along Lake Clear.

I got to spend a wonderful weekend there with my sister-in-law and two nieces about 14 years ago - it really is a magical spot.

Shown in the picture are my sister-in-law Karen, my husband Brad, my brother-in-law Jeff and my late father-in-law David.

Summer Stock Sunday - 34

For the third year running, here comes one of my favorite bloggy events - Robin's Summer Stock Sunday meme.

She invites all to post summery photos and visit other bloggers who share their feelings and memories about this magical season.

Last year I decided to post only vintage photos for this feature. They were so enthusiastically received that this year I'll keep 'em coming.

This shot was taken by my dad in the late 70s, while I was in my Little House on the Prairie obsessive phase.

I still have these phases. They're a part of my creative process. It's all good.

Anyway, because I used to obsess about Laura Ingalls' red calico dress and her 19th century boots, my mom indulged her sewing/costuming cravings and made me and my sister our own Little House dresses.

I still have this dress. It's hanging in my closet at this very moment.

5 on Friday - Set 56

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

Next up in my series of popular music through the decades - the 1970s!

1 - Maggie May - Rod Stewart - 1971

Mother, what a lover
You wore me out

All you did was wreck my bed
And in the morning kick me in the head
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore

You lured me away from home
Cause you didn't want to be alone
You stole my heart
I couldn't leave you if I tried

- Quittenton / Stewart

2 - The Jean Genie - David Bowie - 1972

New York's a go-go
And everything tastes nice
Poor little greenie
Get back home

The jean genie
Lives on his back
The jean genie
Loves chimney stacks

He's outrageous
He screams and he bawls
Jean genie
Let yourself go!

- David Bowie

3 - Whatever Gets You Through the Night - John Lennon - 1974

CLICK HERE to listen to the song

Whatever gets you through the night
It's alright
It's alright

It's your money or your life
It's alright
It's alright

Don't need a sword to cut through flowers
Oh no
Oh no

- John Lennon

4 - You're My Best Friend - Queen - 1976

Ooo, you make me live
Whenever this world is cruel to me
I've got you
To help me forgive

Ooo, you make me live now, honey
Ooo, you make me live

- John Deacon

5 - Atomic - Blondie - 1979

Make me tonight
Tonight, make it right

Make me tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Make it magnificent
Tonight
Right

Your hair is beautiful
Oh, tonight

Atomic

- Destri / Harry
