Dona Nobis Pacem -- 9 -- Blog4Peace

Today is a very special day on so many levels.

If you're Canadian, you already know why the bells have rung with joy throughout the land.

If you've come to A Piece of My Mind from Blog4Peace, there's a reason that Canadians are celebrating with tears of relief and wide-beaming smiles of hope.

Today we witnessed the swearing-in of Canada's newest prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

It's impossible to go into details about this without turning an apolitical peace movement into something its founder, Mimi Lenox, would prefer to keep aside for this special day.

So far I've typed several things that I've quickly erased, because I deeply respect Mimi's reason for keeping things non-partisan.

I will simply say that for a country made up of two genders and of people descended from many ethnic groups, as well as sending representatives from six distinct regions, the cabinet ministers sworn in alongside Trudeau today at last reflects Canada's citizens in a way that's never happened before.

As well, Canadians were invited to witness the swearing-in ceremony in a spirit of openness that has been completely absent in Ottawa for the past nine years. In fact, this ceremony has never before been witnessed by the public. There was limited space inside Rideau Hall for the event, so large-screen tvs were set up outside to broadcast the speaking of the oaths, to cheers of delight that filtered inside at several key moments.

For this year's Blog4Peace, I'm posting a song that captures the spirit of today's swearing-in of a new government in my nation's capitol, a spirit that so many of my fellow Canadians share with me.

Many changes in government begin with promises and end in cynicism. My husband and my mom watched the ceremonies with me, and it really touched me that my mom became more and more excited as each new cabinet member came forward to swear the oath. She has seen more parliaments than me, and she said today that she's never seen a group of people that exuded such a sense of dynamic change. The simple yet profound difference of having an equal number of male and female cabinet ministers was something I don't think my mom had ever thought she'd witness.

The reason I've wrapped this year's post around a political celebration has its roots in the mean-spirited tone of the campaign run by the outgoing government, in contrast to the optimistic tone of the incoming government. There's a relieved sense in Canada that we've somehow managed to pull off a revolution without having to fire a shot.

My deep and grateful thanks go out to my fellow Canadians for showing up in record numbers on voting day. With Remembrance Day / Veteran's Day coming up, Canadians have shown that standing up for your country doesn't only mean serving in the armed forces. Peacefully showing up to vote can mean all the difference.

Blog 4 Peace -- 7 -- Dona Nobis Pacem -- Grant Us Peace

Today I'm joining with Mimi Lenox and a world of Peace Bloggers as we put our thirst for Peace into the Universe.

This piece is from Vivaldi's Gloria, which my choir is singing at the end of the month. Vivaldi's Gloria is one of my favorite works, and as an alto I love this piece in particular.

On Dona Nobis Pacem day, Vivaldi's work sends out this wish:

"Lamb of God
You who take away the sins of the world
Grant us peace"

I'd like to take a moment to address this wish, sent out into the Universe.

Wishes are a good starting point. You can't get anywhere without wishing for something. Whether you wish you could write a book, or visit a place you've always longed to see, if you don't start by hoping for it, where will you be?

You'll be in the same place you're in now.

The Blog 4 Peace movement asks us to take our wishes a little further than that. On Blog 4 Peace Day, we're asked to fill social media with our hopes for peace, in order to further the worldwide conversation towards peace.

What will that do? you may ask. Just a bunch of bloggers and Facebookers, Twitter users and Pinterest pinners posting about peace.

Well, if you think about Amazon and its algorithms, when a book goes on sale and a good number of people all purchase it on the same day, that activity drives the book higher onto Top 100 or even Top 10 lists. Amazon then starts promoting the book to readers who have bought similar books. Success builds on success.

If we all continue to blog for peace every year on Nov. 4th, if we send out Facebook posts, tweet about peace and pin peace to our Pinterest boards, we will collectively push our wishes and hopes for peace into the Universe's Top 10 algorithm.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks to the National Chamber Choir of Armenia for such a rich interpretation.

Dona Nobis Pacem

Happy BlogBlast for Peace Day!

I dedicate this year's post to all prisoners who have suffered torture throughout the centuries, and who continue to suffer today.

As I write the second book in my Dragonsfyre dark fantasy series featuring Scorpius, the falconer's apprentice turned lord's man, I'm dealing with issues of torture and its psychological aftermath.

This piece by Vivaldi is a beautiful contemplation on true peace being elusive in life, and waiting for us in the afterlife.

However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't reach our hands out to our brothers and sisters who suffer.

To all whose cries have been shielded from those who could hear and offer protection, I offer this post and the book I'm writing.

Peace to all from A Piece of My Mind.

Nulla in mundo pax sincera

In this world
there is no honest peace
free from bitterness

pure and true
sweet Jesus, lies in Thee

Amidst punishment and torment
lives the contented soul,
chaste love its only hope

Dona Nobis Pacem / 5 on Friday - Set 91

Let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic

This year's Blogblast For Peace is dedicated to the late Jack Layton, the newly-elected leader of the opposition here in Canada who passed away after scoring a nation-changing victory in the spring.

On the day of his passing, his family released a Letter to the Nation from Jack.

In his closing words, Jack has left us all a legacy that resonated deeply with millions of people.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."

He was known as a scrappy political opponent in earlier days, but in his statesman years Jack had perfected the art of reaching compromise between radically opposed parties. He knew how to listen past the rhetoric, and had the iron will to insist on taking action that included practical solutions, not just lip service.

Jack is the ideal embodiment of the Blogblast For Peace movement. He sought dialogue and action together.

Here's my Blogblast For Peace 5 on Friday set - and here's to you, Jack.

1 - Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) - George Harrison

Love

2 - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World - Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole

Hope

3 - Rise Up - The Parachute Club

Optimism

This was performed at Jack's state funeral, held at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

4 - (What's So Funny 'Bout)Peace, Love and Understanding - Elvis Costello

5 - Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

This was also performed at the funeral.

Peace to all from Julia @ A Piece of My Mind.

Dona Nobis Pacem

Grant us peace.

Hundreds of bloggers are talking about peace today. Hundreds more are placing their wishes for peace as their status on Facebook. And even more people are tweeting peace on Twitter.

When a unified prayer like this reaches out into the Universe, it's a powerful force for change. I want to thank all of you who are reading this, posting about it and tweeting peace for reaching out to one another today.

For my Blog Blast post this year, I'm turning to my great passion - dance.

In the clip below, Louise Lecavalier performs a section of a larger dance piece for La La La Human Steps, a contemporary dance company from Quebec, here in Canada.

I had the incredible pleasure of seeing this company perform live while I worked at the performing arts theatre in Toronto in the 90's. And as I set my mind working on what to post for Blog Blast this year, I found myself gravitating toward Louise Lecavalier's signature struggling movements.

I thought about our tendency to fight things.

Not just one another in war's great theatre. Not just parental figures, romantic partners or career rivals. We fight all of these and we fight ourselves. It's the essential ingredient that makes up conflict, and where would we writers be without it to construct our heart-stopping stories?

The thing that I love about this dance piece is what happens when Louise decides to stop fighting. When she surrenders to her partner, or, on a deeper level, to the inevitable.

What would happen if we all decided to stop fighting for a moment? If we all stood still, stopped flailing, stopped using our energy to avoid, to evade and push away?

What would happen if we stopped thinking of surrender as a form of loss? Perhaps surrender is a form of courage. Peace cannot enter if we're in perpetual motion.

On this day of wishes for peace, I wish all of you that sweet moment of surrender, when we catch our breath and feel how wonderful it is to simply BE.

Through the Opera Glasses - 68 - One Month Countdown to the 2010 Blog Blast For Peace

The very first Blog Blast For Peace appeared in the Blogosphere in 2006.

I didn't begin blogging until March of 2007, but it wasn't long before I began to notice blue peace banners on the sidebars of many of my blog friends.

These are actually called Peace Globes, and they're my favorite part of the Blog Blast event. It's amazing to see what people come up with. In fact, I did a special Thursday Thirteen featuring my favorite Peace Globes in 2008:

Peace Globe Gallery at A Piece of My Mind

I didn't know the first thing about how to create one, but I really, really wanted to participate. So I messed around in my Paint program until I managed to make my very first one, in time for my first Blog Blast post.

Because there are many bloggers who don't know how to make Peace Globes, there are Worker Bee bloggers who will make one for you. My friend Travis is a Worker Bee - if you'd like a Peace Globe, contact him at Trav's Thoughts.

So what does a Blog Blast For Peace post look like?

You can simply fly your Peace Globe.

You can share a song about peace from You Tube.

You can share a poem about peace.

You can write down what peace means to you.

You can share your hopes and dreams for peace.

You can write about peace in your Facebook status.

You can tweet about peace on Twitter.

The most important thing to remember is to name your post Dona Nobis Pacem, which means Grant us peace. In this way, the same message will be sent into cyberspace on the same day.

This movement was launched by Mimi Lenox, who is thrilled, awed and humbled by the fact that bloggers from more than 50 countries around the world take part in this incredible event.

I am one of 140 Canadian bloggers who have flown Peace Globes during past Blog Blasts.

I invite all of you to join in next month, Nov. 4th, when we inform the Universe of our collective desire for Peace.

Poetry Train Monday - 126 - A War Against War

Today's found poem is taken from all of the peace quotes I posted during the lead-up to the Blog Blast for Peace, which took place on Thursday, Nov. 5th.

I got the idea for this from Travis, who reposted all of the peace quotes he'd featured in his tireless promotion of the Blog Blast while the originator, Mimi Lenox, was keeping vigil with her father as he passed away.

There are so many Peace Globes launched into the blogosphere, I'm still visiting them all. Even though the Blog Blast officially occured on the 5th, I encourage you to visit them because it's not physically possible to get to everyone on one day.

A War Against War

If we are to teach real peace
Real peace
Here in this wondrous way we keep
We shall have to begin with the children

This is how change happens
No snowflake ever falls in the wrong place
When we need some relief
Where Mercy, Love and Pity dwell

We teach
Someone picks it up
Action is eloquence
A real war against war

If we are to carry on
If we do our part of the race
When I can’t find my feet
Pass it on. It keeps going

Begin with the children
It's a relay race
Snowflakes falling
Mercy dwelling

This world
These haunts of ancient peace
Goals are dreams with deadlines
We usually get what we anticipate

Let us go there again
Oh,
When I need rest and sleep
There God is dwelling too

Our job really is to
Pass it on
We're very conscious
We usually get what we anticipate

It's a real war
A war against war
These haunts
This peace

And that is how it is

For my Peace Globe today I'm featuring a band who epitomizes my own philosophy regarding world peace.

If you're busy playing music, dancing, singing and celebrating life, there is no room for aggression, destruction and suffering.

As this band likes to sing: Party! Party! Party! Party! Party! Party! After party!

Gogol Bordello is a band made of members from all around the world:

Ukraine
Russia
Ethiopia
Ecuador
Israel
United States
United Kingdom

They come from a wide assortment of ethnic and religious backgrounds, including Eastern European, Gypsy or Romani, African, Indigenous people of the Americas and Asian.

There are men and women.

Their ages range from 30 years old to 54.

If you watch the clip, you'll catch the infectious delirium of joy this group exudes. The crowd is jumping!

Lead singer Eugene Hutz sings in a mixture of English, Ukrainian and Gypsy/Romani. Here are the lyrics from the song that I offer to the Blog Blast today:

Mishto means "Good"

Sha bu'et kruto blya! Sha bu'et kruto! means "This is gonna kick ass!"

T´aven saste taj baxtale means "You should be healthy and lucky"

Is this what we really need?

What if this is my only chance?

What if this is my holy war?

What if this is my stupid dance?

What the f#%k you waiting for?

Let's go!

The Queen's Meme - WBLOG TV - Scroll down for Wordless Wednesday

WBLOG TV: The Meme

"The place where unbloggable news happens and sources are never a secret. You are the creator, producer, writer and news anchor of the WBLOG nightly news. It is your job to deliver the news in your own style from your own blog." - Thus speaketh the Queen of Memes

1 - The Weather Channel: Give me your personality forecast. Are you sunny, wet, windy, or cloudy? Why?

This morning gave A Piece of My Mind scattered thundershowers as a migraine brewed early in the day. But a high pressure acupuncture system leveled the storm by midday - a first, ladies and gentlemen. A first! Never, in the history of this migraineur, has a day that started out with narcotic painkiller moved within hours to taking acetaminophen with codeine, to going 7 hours with no painkiller - and counting.

Forecast for this blogger: "Sunny days, sweepin' the clouds away..."

2 - The News Channel: What is the breaking news story of the day in your world?

Four-day weekend = 4000 words on my Victorian-gardener-becomes-Van-Diemen's-Land-convict story. Cue the fireworks!

3 - The Economic Channel: How are things on the economic front? And more importantly, do you have ideas to save the planet from financial ruin?

In financial markets, A Piece of My Mind is suffering a recession due to the effects of the acupuncture mentioned earlier in our weather segment. Employee health benefits performed well during the first quarter, but the historic stockmarket decline within the neurotransmitters forecasts a prolonged season of treatment which falls far outside of health coverage parameters.

It's Victory Garden time, folks. And eyebrow-pencil-down-the-legs-instead-of-nylons.

But we'll flash the V for Victory sign - remember the 7-hour gap in painkiller? It's all worth it.

In international business news, one word says it all when it comes to saving the planet: Microcredit.

4 - The Entertainment Channel: Give us the latest blog celebrity gossip. Dish it!

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will celebrate his 22nd birthday in his home town of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia - the originating broadcast signal for A Piece of My Mind.

On Aug. 7th, Sid the Kid will bring the Stanley Cup home to share with all of us in here in Cole Harbour.

"I’ve always had this dream of playing street hockey for the Cup," Crosby told a crowd of excited employees at the Montreal headquarters of Reebok-CCM Hockey earlier this month.

"I did it growing up. But this time, we have the real one. So I’m going to get some friends together that I grew up with and we’re going to play for the real thing this time."
- Chronicle Herald

5 - The Sports Channel: Make up a sport, give your team a name and choose five players from the list of names on the Mr. Linky list. What are the rules of the game?

The game is Bennis. I played it all the time as a kid. It's rather like volleyball, but with a balloon and without a net. The rules are - once the balloon is in the air, don't let it touch the floor. Every kind of spectacular dive and pretzel-like move is encouraged. There's no scoring. Only gales of laughter at the lengths to which team members will go to keep the balloon off the floor.

Star athletes for Bennis:

Finding Pam
Jen the Dust Bunny Hostage
Mielikki
Psychic Mama Indigo Child
Mejis

6 - The Comedy Channel: How will you make us laugh today? Tell us a blunny (that's blog + funny for all you non-blog speakers)

I'll hand this over to the folks from Corner Gas:

7 - The Religious Channel: Make up a blog religion. Tell us why your blog church will save our souls.

I can't make up a religion any more amazing than the very Blogosphere itself. When I enter the great fellowship of Blogdom, I feel connected to people all over our fabulous planet. I love joining virtual hands with everyone I've met here - most especially all of you!

In my Church of Blogdom, we stress Not Apologizing For Not Posting. It's summer. Live!

8 - (but who's counting?) The Soap Opera Channel: What is the name of your soap opera?

Days and Weeks and Months of Our Lives Covering for Everyone Else at Work is a long-running soap opera that runs wherever workplaces limp through summer vacation staff shortages. You may be a long-time viewer of this show.

Will the manager return from her cottage to regale the staff about the roast she has waiting in the oven - when her staff has been sucking on dry macaroni while waiting for Employment Benefits to kick in during the enforced lay-off? The same lay-off that allowed the manager to get suntanned at her cottage?

Will the new employee who told the small business owner that she needed training take it personally when he hands her Windows XP For Dummies?

Will the evening shift employee who gets stuck training all the new staff and who arrives to a back hallway filled with stock to be priced be able to resist strangling her boss when, after re-counting the safe four times to find $300.00 missing, arrives the next evening to be told 'it was found' - and then hears chatter about the boss's luck at the casino the night of the missing money?

Tune in next week when an office-wide meeting is called by the visiting executive - who tells everyone to buy the book Who Moved My Cheese?

The Queen's Meme - What Is The Meaning of Thyme and Other Deep Questions

The Cooking Meme (What Is The Meaning of Thyme and Other Deep Questions)

1. If you could put thyme in a bottle, what is the first thing that you'd like to do?

I'd hand it over to my mom, with whom my husband and I live. She'd use it to make something incredibly divine, some kind of mushroom-y chicken-y thing. Mmm...I can taste it now...

2. Do eggs really crack or do they merely have a nervous breakdown?

Eggs crack for the most part. They can withstand a lot, but in the right hands they fold like a souffle.

3. Why are you whipping the butter? What did it ever do to you?

There's a lot about butter that most people don't understand. It doesn't want to be hard. It longs to reveal its softer side.

But it needs the permission of a thorough whipping before it will succumb.

4. Do your spoons spoon in the drawer? Have you ever noticed? And more importantly, if wooden spoons spoon do they get splinters?

My spoons don't really make it as far as the drawer. To be honest, I've got most of my flatware still wrapped in newspaper from our move here 10 years ago. My husband and I dug out a knife, fork and spoon each when we first got settled in Cole Harbour. These utensils just keep moving from the sink to the dish rack to being used while we eat. Sink, dish rack, eat. It's minimalism at its best.

As for the wooden spoons - I used to have some when I lived in Toronto and used to cook. I've never unwrapped them, either. I pop in frozen dinners or eat my mom's exquisite creations. It's all part of my paring down on non-writing-activity in order to claim more writing time in a 24-hour-period.

5. You hear: "Dumpling, my Dumpling, come hither." The candles are lit, the fondue is dipping, the Godiva is pouring, the scallions are steaming and the music is playing.....but wait, the windows are open. Why did you close them?

I don't want the fog to roll in and dampen our smoldering evening...

6. Do you need a recipe to cook or are you a bohemian chef? Show us your reckless and wild side in the kitchen. Don't have one? Here's a recipe I made just for you: You will need a spatula, a whisk, a gallon of Chardonnay, a banana and a rump roast. What is the name of your dish?

First of all - the roast goes up in my mom's freezer. I don't handle raw meat. Blech.

Here's what I cook up with the rest:

Two glasses for the wine
Fill, sip, enjoy

One banana
Peel it
You and significant other each start from one end and eat toward a kiss in the middle

Chase partner with whisk
Change places
Run from partner with whisk
Laugh and drink more wine

Trade whisk for spatula
Repeat chasing, running and laughing
If caught, suffer the consequences
Trade places and repeat

Was there supposed to be a dinner in there somewhere?

Order in.

7. After dinner, the dishes are so dirty that the dishwasher refuses to wash them. What did they say to get in hot water?

They said "Mercy! Mercy!" And the dishwasher relented. Because the dishwasher is me...

8. Is your pot black?

It's stainless steel. At least, that's what I remember...

9. What is the sexiest spice or condiment in your cabinet? What makes it so?

Cajun spice mix. It connects me to any Cajun cousins I might have, and makes me wonder who they could be. And it gives a kick of joie de vivre to a wide range of recipes.

10. How much crock is really in your crock pot?

My crock pot is all crock, all the time. A pot implies cooking, and I'm quite confident the only thing you'll find on the crock pot is a layer of dust from non-use.

Visit Mimi at The Queen's Meme if you'd like to play.

The Queen's Meme - Mission Impossible

Mission Impossible Meme

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing

1. You are a guest on the space shuttle. You just arrived on the moon and realize you forgot something back home that you can't live without. What is it and how do you convince them to go back and fetch it?

My asthma puffers! Definitely can't live without them. When one of the astronauts cracks a really dark joke, I start laughing uncontrollably. This leads to much wheezing, tears and clutching at my throat - while still laughing. That's when the missing puffers are discovered. Or rather, not discovered. Luckily, the astronauts are a bunch of smarty-pants people. They rig up some concoction or other, and in ten minutes or so the wheezing settles down.

But then the same guy cracks another joke...

2. Pretend you are a teacher in a rough public school for one day. You have been assigned to teach Manners 101. You have the "challenging bad butt kids" class (remember this is a pretend school and anyway I can't say ass on my blog 'cause it's so unQueenly and I might get fined or something). They are jumping up and down, cursing, and throwing things at you.
What is the first thing you would write on the board?

First, I would use my Scorpio Dragon Death Glare to freeze all the rowdies in their tracks. This is the greatest weapon in my personal arsenal. I've used it my whole life, and it never lets me down.

Next I would invite whomever was willing to admit they didn't know the answer to my question to write the answer on the board, once we reviewed it in class. This would hopefully keep the disrupters from wanting to advertise their inadequacies. And for students truly interested in learning, it would facilitate discussion and push everyone a little farther along the learning curve.

3. Someone in your family or a friend has started a blog. They think it is anonymous but you have figured it out. They are saying derogatory things about you. Do you tell them or do you read it for awhile? How would you handle it?

I read it, comment under a different name and wait. Wait for that perfect moment - perhaps a gathering of peers - to mention a tidbit along with my incognito name that only the offending blogger would recognize. Then I watch the blogger's skin go pasty pale.

4. If you had one dollar left in your pocket, what would you spend it on?

A coffee. I often spend my last dollar on coffee. That's how I know.

5. President Obama and the First Lady are coming over for dinner. What do you serve?

Once they arrive, I tell them to pile back into their limo. We're heading out to The Sou'Wester out at Peggy's Cove for fish and chips and gingerbread.

6. You walk in on your lover. He or she is trying on your clothes. What do you do?

I tell him he looks very fetching.

Then I join him, and we goof around until the clothes come back off again...

7. Every astronaut must have shots! Choose your vaccination: You only get one and you can't enjoy any of the attributes of the other choices. You choose either:
(1) The fountain of eternal youth and sexual vigor but only for 10 years
(2) perfect health for a lifetime
(3) eternal mind-numbing nirvana and peace of mind
(4) unlimited hedonism for one year with no negative consequences.

Perfect health for a lifetime sounds awfully good to me, right about now (reaching for my painkiller...)

Luckily, I've got another acupuncture session tomorrow. A really intense weather system rumbling through has finally worn me down, migraine-wise - but it took a whole week. I've been abnormally able to withstand a really bad week with low pressure systems socking us in.

But I do have to sigh with relief that it's Friday.

To play along, visit Mimi at The Queen's Meme.

Mimi Lenox says "The astronauts are a bunch of smarty-pants people" cracked me up.

Ms Snarky Pants says Muhaha Your brand of evil payback. It warms my heart. :D

Dorte H says Hilarious answers! LOL I liked the one about the unruly kids.

How Do You Sleep? Meme

Mimi Lenox, the originator of the Blogblast For Peace also reigns as the Queen of Memes. Here's one I thought looked enticing...perhaps because it's Friday and I'm SO-O-O tired after a full work week that followed 11 glorious days off between Christmas and New Year's.

This picture of me lounging on a luxurious bed was taken last August when my friend Lisa came for a visit. We stayed a few nights over at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel. What total bliss that was.

1. How long do you sleep each night?

Ah...during my wonderful, precious vacation I immediately reverted to my night-owl schedule. Hit the sack at 3:00, 3:30 (am) - got up at 9:00, 9:30. So 6 hours did me wonders. I used to sleep for 7, if left to my own devices. That would probably be the case again if I were to be off work for longer than a week.

But I hate to admit that I stumble my way through the work week with an average of 4 and a half hours of sleep. I generally get off the computer by 11:30 or 12:00, then need wind-down time on the couch with the Pack (my husband and our dog.) Then I transfer into bed by 1:00 or 1:30.

It's not that I want 4 and a half hours of sleep. It's my job starting at 8:30 in the morning that totally screws things up.

2. Do you fall asleep easily?

I don't bother trying to go to sleep unless I'm sleepy. If I attempted to go to bed at 10:30, I'm quite certain I would lay there with 'insomnia'.

So once I do head for bed, I'm out like a light the minute my head hits the pillow.

3. Do you fall asleep at times not in your bed?

I snooze on the bus on the way into work and on the way home. And I definitely crash on the couch when I curl up with the Pack. It's so comfy on the couch with Xena curled up next to me, or with my legs draped over my husband's lap. It's heaven, really.

4. Do you listen to music or use white noise to sleep?

When I'm on the couch, my husband is watching TV, so I fall asleep to the sound of a movie or a TV show. But very, very low. He's become accustomed to turning on the English subtitles when I'm sinking into sleep so that he can follow the story.

I prefer quiet to white noise, but I can sleep either way. Just not loud. My supersonic hearing is not a bonus at times like that.

5. Do you sleep through the night or get up a couple of times?

I used to get up through the night once or twice, for years and years. I've been able to sleep through the night for over a year, now that I think of it. Who knows why? Haven't the slightest idea.

6. Do you have trouble sleeping away from your own bed?

When I was a kid, it took me about a half hour to an hour to drift off in an unfamiliar bed. I'd just lay there listening to all the different sounds, taking in the new atmosphere.

Now that I'm in my 40's, I'm so grateful for a little vacation or an overnight, I usually sink into the comfy guest bed and zzzz......

This picture was taken a few years ago at a Girls' Overnight in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. The Girls are my high school choir friends. This was my comfy, comfy bed...

7. Do you need an alarm clock to get you up?

Absolutely yes on work days. I'm just not an early bird.

8. Do you ever take medication to help you sleep?

Not sleeping medication, but I generally take painkiller before bed. I've got chronic pain which will absolutely keep me from drifting to sleep if I don't take something. Believe me, I've tried.

9. Do you/have you slept with pets?

I love drifting off on the couch with Xena curled up beside me. It's a completely blissful feeling to have her little body tucked up against mine. But I don't have her in the bed with me because I am an allergic person, and it's important to have an oasis of relief where my exposures are at a minimum.
