It's Victoria Day Weekend here in the Great White North. That means there's not supposed to be any more white stuff -- and certainly here on the east coast it's warming up, my garden is bursting into bloom and I'm enjoying a long weekend.

Here are some long-weekend-worthy tunes to set the mood.

1 - Safe and Sound -- Capital Cities

What a great video! Can't tell you how much I love it.

2 - Best Day of My Life -- American Authors

3 - Counting Stars -- OneRepublic

4 - Get Lucky -- Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams

5 - Don't You Worry Child -- Swedish House Mafia featuring John Martin

A to Z Blog Challenge -- 5 on Friday -- Set 217 -- D is for Dance Club / House Music

Welcome to Day 4 of this year's A to Z Blog Challenge.

Fridays at A Piece of My Mind are all about music. So for today's challenge --

It's April, and time for my monthly 5 on Friday feature -- The Hit Makers.

Once a month I'm going to feature the songs that launched careers. I'll be looking at different musical styles and the groups or singers from those styles who I love the best.

If you caught my Day 1 post, you'll know that I'm a passionate ballet fan. But I also love all forms of dance, including the everyman variety known as social dance. These days, the music for that is known as Dance Club or House Music. Why 'house' music?

It could refer to a specific Chicago club called The Warehouse where the early forms of house music were created by innovative DJs. It could refer to the term 'house' as the performance venue, which is what all theatres are called. It also could refer to urban slang for 'party'.

Here are five tunes that brought these artists to the forefront of public attention. Some of the artists were actually well-known in their underground niche for years before breaking through to wider public discovery. Some of them were already established in pop dance, and were pushing the boundaries by bringing house music to a wider audience.

1 - Vogue -- Madonna -- 1990

2 - Poker Face -- Lady Gaga -- 2008

3 - In Your Eyes -- Kylie Minogue -- 2002

4 - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) -- Spiller -- 2000

5 - Save the World -- Swedish House Mafia -- 2011

Since we're still in the first few weeks of the new year, when many of us have embarked on new projects, or have rolled up our sleeves to complete our on-going ones, here are five songs about hope.

5 on Friday - Set 148

Travis at Trav's Thoughts invites everyone to lay down a short set of music that takes their fancies for his 5 on Friday meme.

This week's set belongs to Scorpius, the main character from my NaNoWriMo 2012 project. Book 1 of my Dragonsfyre series follows Scorpius from age 7 until he becomes a lord's man bodyguard by age 19. In Book 2, Scorpius enters his 20s only to find the Eighth Dominion is a far more dangerous land than he could have imagined when he apprenticed with the falconer.

For a taste of what Scorpius and the others were up to during NaNoWriMo, check out my snippets posted for yesterday's Thursday Thirteen.

1 - Only the Lonely - Frank Sinatra

2 - I Will Not Bow - Breaking Benjamin

3 -In the End - Linkin Park

4 - Poison and Wine - The Civil Wars

For those who have been reading my blog for awhile, you'll know that Scorpius has an uncanny resemblance to Richard Armitage, featured in these clips from North & South.

5 - Save the World Tonight - Swedish House Mafia
